I find folktales and fairytales interesting. I actually like fairytales probably a whole lot more than the average person, but it isn’t a competition or anything. I just have a problem where I forget that people main sources of reference are the Disney movies. I feel like we all read fairytales and nursery rhymes when we were small, or at least watched “Super Why” or “Shelley Duvall’s Faerie Tale Theater”, but guess I can’t be surprised that the first thing that comes to mind is one of the biggest media corporations in the world. I’m just a bit tired that fairytale retellings aren’t even fairytale retellings sometimes- they’re retellings of the Disney movie. Obviously, Shrek makes sense because it is metatextually a critique of Disney, they are allowed to be sassy about the company’s version of the stories specifically. But there are other fairytale movies that have come out recently that clearly never saw any other version of the story that they are working on. (I could list more examples, but maybe I’ll make this longer later. ) I also find it interesting that mythology fandoms can get so passionate, but there’s almost nothing on the fairytale side of things.
